ジョージ・ガーシュウィンは、1898年アメリカのニューヨークに4人兄弟の次男として生まれました。 両親は迫害を逃れて1890年にアメリカに渡った、ロシア系ユダヤ人です。 幼少期は決して裕福な家庭とは言えませんでしたが、両親は子供たちのために中古のピアノを買い与えるなど、教育に熱心だったそうです。 ピアノはもともと兄のアイラに与えたものでしたが、文学少年だったアイラは興味を示しませんでした。 しかし弟のジョージは驚くべき才能を示し、後に偉大な作曲家へと成長します。 ガーシュウィンがピアノに出会ったのは12〜3歳頃だったので、一般の音楽家よりも遅いスタートとなりましたが、逆にそのことが、形式にとらわれることのない作風に繋がったのかもしれません。 George Gershwin was one of the most significant American composers of the 20th century, known for popular stage and screen numbers as well as classical compositions.
